The 2026 Oscars Are Over, So Why Does Digger Still Have a 64% Chance of a Best Picture Nomination?

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 15, 2026. Ten films received Best Picture nominations. One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, won the top prize along with five other awards. Sinners set an all-time record with 16 nominations. The full nominee list is public, verified, and four months old. Digger does not appear on it.

Yet on prediction markets tracked by both Kalshi and Polymarket, Digger's implied probability of earning a Best Picture nomination sits at 64%. That number should be zero. The event this contract references has already resolved. The Academy announced the nominees in January, the ceremony aired in March, and the winners collected their statuettes. This is not an open question. It is a closed one, mispriced by 64 percentage points.

Digger's Oscar Odds Have Fallen 8 Points in Three Days, and That's Still Not Nearly Enough

Three days ago, Digger's contract traded at 73%. It has since dropped to 64%, an 8-point decline that looks like a correction until you remember the destination is 0%. The period low hit 57% before bouncing back 7 points, which means some traders actually bought the dip on a contract that references a concluded event.

The cross-platform spread tells its own story. Kalshi prices Digger at 69%. Polymarket prices it at 60%. A 9-point gap on a binary contract whose outcome is publicly documented suggests that neither platform's participant base has fully processed the information, or that structural barriers are preventing arbitrageurs from collapsing the price. In a normally functioning market, the spread on a resolved event would converge to zero on both platforms within hours, not days.

To put the scale of the mispricing in proportion: the ten actual Best Picture nominees were One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, Bugonia, F1, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, and Train Dreams. Box office data for the nominees was reported as far back as January, with Sinners leading at $280 million domestically and F1 following at $189.6 million. The full nominee slate has been analyzed, debated, and archived. Digger was never part of the conversation.

The Strongest Case for Digger: Could the Market Actually Know Something?

Intellectual honesty requires steelmanning the 64% price. What would need to be true for this contract to be correctly valued?

The first possibility is that this market does not reference the 2026 ceremony at all. The resolution date listed is January 21, 2027, which aligns with the expected announcement window for the 99th Academy Awards. If this contract is asking whether Digger will earn a Best Picture nomination for the 2027 ceremony rather than the one that already occurred, then the 64% price is not absurd on its face. It would mean traders are betting on a future event, and the recent 8-point decline could reflect shifting sentiment about the film's awards-season prospects rather than a delayed reaction to old news.

The second possibility is thinner but worth noting: illiquid markets can sustain mispricing for extended periods when the cost of correcting them exceeds the available profit. If position limits are small or if capital is locked in other contracts, rational traders may simply ignore a known mispricing because the expected return on deploying capital elsewhere is higher. This does not make the price correct. It makes the market structurally incapable of reflecting what participants already know.

The third and most generous reading is that some subset of traders genuinely disputes the nominee list, perhaps because they are confusing preliminary shortlists with final nominees, or because they believe Digger appeared on an international eligibility roster that could translate into future recognition. None of these scenarios withstands scrutiny against the official Academy record, but they would at least explain why capital is still sitting on the wrong side of a resolved question.

What Traders Should Watch Before January 2027

If this contract genuinely targets the 99th Academy Awards, then the current price carries a different kind of risk. No major awards body has recognized Digger with a Best Picture-caliber nomination to date. The film has generated no recent news cycle, no festival buzz, and no critical reassessment that might signal a late-breaking awards push. A 64% implied probability for a film with zero institutional momentum is aggressive by any standard.

The resolution date of January 21, 2027, will determine everything. If the contract settles against the 98th ceremony, this market is a pure arbitrage opportunity at current prices. If it settles against the 99th, traders are paying a steep premium for a film that has shown no evidence of being in contention. Either way, 64% is hard to defend. The only question is whether the correct price is closer to zero or merely far lower than where it trades today. For now, the market is moving in the right direction, just at a pace that suggests most participants are not paying attention.
