- Traders are backing away from Alibaba after two of its AI leaders reportedly left, and Xiaomi remains the clear favorite to finish October on top.

Alibaba's Odds of Best Chinese AI Company by End of October Fall to 16%
Alibaba's chance of being the best Chinese AI company at the end of October fell to 16% on Oct. 18, 2026, down from 24% three days earlier. Two senior figures in its AI organization reportedly left this week, and Polymarket prices Alibaba well behind Xiaomi in a market that resolves on which Chinese company owns the top model on arena.ai's Text Arena (Overall, no style control).
The drop was about 8 percentage points, and 16% is the lowest price of the period. Xiaomi led at 64% in the same Oct. 18 snapshot, followed by Moonshot at 8%, Z.ai at 7% and DeepSeek at 5%, according to Frenzy Capital's Polymarket tracker.
Reported Departures of Zhang Yingya and Rong Yu Coincide with Alibaba's Slide
Two exits are the only Alibaba-specific news found near the move. Zhang Yingya, head of Tongyi Wanxiang, Alibaba's Wan video-generation model, reportedly resigned, according to an Oct. 16 AI roundup from i黑马. Rong Yu, head of science AI at Alibaba's DAMO Academy, reportedly departed on Oct. 15. Neither departure has been confirmed by Alibaba in the sources reviewed.
Both reports fall inside the three-day window of the decline. The roles matter for how the news should be read: Zhang ran a video model and Rong ran scientific AI research, while the market settles on a text leaderboard. Neither exit directly touches the Qwen text models that would carry Alibaba's arena.ai ranking. Alibaba's text work kept shipping in the same week. Alibaba Qwen cited a throughput result of 685 tokens per second for a Qwen3.8 Flash model, per LightSeek Foundation, and Alibaba released the OpenGCUA computer-use agent stack on Oct. 15, according to AI Weekly.
Talent movement also hit a rival. Chen Guangyu, a 17-year-old researcher at Moonshot's Kimi, announced his departure on Oct. 16, GeekPark reported.
No arena.ai Ranking Change or Xiaomi Release Found to Explain the Drop
The cause of the move is not established. Research found no verified change on the arena.ai Text Arena and no Xiaomi model release in the window that would mechanically lift Xiaomi past Alibaba. On that evidence, the decline reads as traders consolidating behind Xiaomi's 64% lead, with the departures as a possible sentiment factor rather than a confirmed ranking shift.
Several developments could reverse or extend the slide before settlement. A new Qwen text release that climbs the Text Arena, or a Xiaomi model slipping in the Overall ranking, would give Alibaba a path back. A fresh Xiaomi release, gains from rivals such as DeepSeek's V4.1 or StepFun's Step 5 Preview, or additional confirmed exits from Alibaba's AI organization would push the other way.
