Lindsay James Now Favored in IA-02 Markets, but Forecasters Disagree
Prediction markets price Democrats at 55% in IA-02 for the first time. The Call the Map model still gives Joe Mitchell a 61-in-100 edge based on R+10 district lean.
Bottom line
Bettors favor Democrats at 55% in IA-02 for the first time, even as the top forecasting model still picks Republican Joe Mitchell to hold the seat.

Lindsay James Takes the Lead in IA-02 Prediction Markets for the First Time
Lindsay James, the Democratic candidate for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, now has a 55% implied probability of winning the open House seat, the first time Democrats have been favored in this prediction market. Democrats crossed 50% earlier this week on both Kalshi and Polymarket, a 10-percentage-point climb from a period low of 46% just three days ago.

The seat opened after incumbent Ashley Hinson announced her Senate run, transforming IA-02 from a routine Republican hold into a competitive contest between Republican Joe Mitchell and James, a state representative. The race also features Independent Dave Bushaw and Libertarian Rick Stewart, though neither has attracted measurable market attention. What makes the Democratic surge notable is not just its speed but the fact that it now directly contradicts the leading quantitative forecast for this district.
The IA-02 Forecasting Model Still Has Joe Mitchell as the Favorite: Here's the Gap
Call the Map's model gives Joe Mitchell a 61-in-100 win probability with a projected margin of R+1.8 as of its September 11 edition. That puts model and market roughly 16 percentage points apart on the same race at the same moment: one says Republican, the other says Democrat.
The model's margin is built on IA-02's measured partisan terrain, which leans Republican by nearly 10 points before any current-cycle evidence is applied. Polls and the national environment pull the forecast back toward Democrats, but not enough to flip the prediction. The model's 80% confidence interval spans R+10.2 to D+6.6, meaning it considers a James victory plausible but less likely than a Mitchell win.
Bettors are clearly weighting something differently. The question is what.
Are There Polls for the IA-02 House Race Between Lindsay James and Joe Mitchell?
Only two public polls for IA-02 appear in the Call the Map aggregate. A July 2026 survey by Global Strategy Group, commissioned by House Majority PAC, showed James leading Mitchell by one point (D 46%, R 45%) among 600 voters. An earlier April poll from Public Policy Polling found James ahead by three points (D 36%, R 33%) among 673 registered voters, though the low raw numbers suggest a large undecided share.
Neither poll is recent enough to explain this week's market move. Both show James competitive or slightly ahead, which runs closer to the market's 55% Democratic price than to Call the Map's R+1.8 forecast. The model absorbs these polls but dilutes them with the district's structural Republican lean. Bettors appear to weight the head-to-head numbers more heavily, or they are pricing in information not yet captured by public surveys.
The Cook Political Report's downgrade of IA-02 from "Likely Republican" to "Lean Republican," reported by Prediction Hunt, was the most prominent external signal in recent weeks. Whether that rating change or a more recent development triggered this specific 10-point move in three days is unclear. No new polls, endorsements, or candidate events have been confirmed in the last 72 hours.
The Case Against the Market: Why Joe Mitchell Could Still Win
The strongest argument for Mitchell is structural. IA-02's partisan lean favors Republicans by a wide margin before any candidate-specific factors enter the picture. Call the Map pegs that baseline at nearly R+10, and the model only partially offsets it with polling and national conditions. Two polls showing James ahead by 1 to 3 points do not erase a district that voted for Donald Trump by a comfortable margin.
Mitchell has also outraised James, reporting $1.9 million in receipts compared to James's $1.6 million. That $300,000 gap matters more in a district-level House race than it would in a statewide contest. Additionally, outside spending could tilt the board: J Street's super PAC recently committed $3 million targeting AIPAC-backed Republicans, but whether IA-02 falls within that spending map has not been confirmed.
The presence of Dave Bushaw as an Independent, with $584,800 raised, adds a wild card. If Bushaw draws disproportionately from one candidate, the effective margin shifts. In a race with a projected R+1.8 finish, even a small third-party siphon could be decisive in either direction.
What This Gap Means for IA-02 Bettors
A 16-percentage-point disagreement between a model and a prediction market is not normal. One of them is wrong, or at minimum one is failing to price a piece of information the other has captured. The model's advantage is consistency and structure: it processes every input the same way across 435 races. The market's advantage is speed and aggregation of private knowledge, including internal polling, field reports, and fundraising signals that may not be public.
If you believe district fundamentals and historical voting patterns are the best predictor of open-seat outcomes, Call the Map's 61% for Mitchell is the bet. If you believe the two existing polls, the Cook downgrade, and whatever private signals have flowed into the market over three days, then 55% for James may even understate Democratic chances.
Resolution is set for November 3, 2026. With 52 days left and almost no public polling infrastructure in this district, prediction markets may remain the only continuously updated probability signal for the race. For live pricing and platform comparison, see the IA-02 House race odds page.
