Pat Murphy Has MLB's Best Record and Back-to-Back Awards, So Why Are His NL Manager of the Year Chances Falling?

Pat Murphy's probability of winning the 2026 NL Manager of the Year has dropped from 38% to 30% in three days, not because of anything the Milwaukee Brewers did wrong, but because Craig Counsell is absorbing nearly all the probability shed by Walt Weiss following Atlanta's three-game skid and the Ronald Acuña suspension threat. Murphy is the two-time defending NL Manager of the Year leading a Brewers club that holds the best record in Major League Baseball as of late August 2026.

His contract extension through 2028, signed in February, was a vote of institutional confidence. He managed through back surgery and a hip procedure this summer without missing a game. By every traditional metric, his candidacy for a third consecutive award should be strengthening. Instead, prediction markets are moving the other way. The paradox: Murphy's résumé keeps improving while his market price keeps shrinking.

Walt Weiss's Atlanta Skid Is Reshuffling NL Manager of the Year Chances, and Craig Counsell Is the Beneficiary

The catalyst is in Atlanta, not Milwaukee. Walt Weiss's NL Manager of the Year odds dropped to 16% on Polymarket after the Braves dropped three straight games and reports surfaced that Ronald Acuña Jr. faces a potential suspension tied to MLB's substance-abuse policy. Two overlapping negatives compressed Weiss's candidacy in under a week, shedding roughly 11 percentage points of implied probability that had to go somewhere.

Most of it went to Craig Counsell. In our earlier reporting, Counsell held 28% to Murphy's 19% in the reshuffled field. Since then, Murphy has climbed slightly while Counsell has continued absorbing displaced probability, widening the gap between first and second in the market. The net effect: Murphy is stuck in a middle tier, not losing on merit but losing relative positioning as Counsell consolidates frontrunner status. When voters (and bettors) recalibrate away from one narrative, they rarely distribute probability evenly. They gravitate toward the freshest story, and Counsell's Cubs provide one.

NL Manager of the Year Odds Tracker: Where Murphy, Counsell, and Weiss Stand Right Now

The current market snapshot shows Murphy at 30%, with a notable spread between platforms: Kalshi prices him at 32% while Polymarket lists him at 27%. That 5-point gap reflects disagreement between the two venues about how much of the Weiss sell-off Murphy should absorb versus Counsell. The period low for Murphy sits at 27%, meaning his price has bounced slightly from its floor but remains well below the 38% level from just days ago.

For context, the Brewers held MLB's best record as of mid-August, and Murphy himself noted the team still had not "gelled." If that assessment is even partially correct, Milwaukee's second-half ceiling could be higher than its current pace, which is already the best in baseball.

The Case Against Murphy: Voter Fatigue Is Real, and the Market Knows It

Here is the strongest argument for why 30% might be too high, not too low. Only four managers in history have won the NL Manager of the Year three consecutive times. Voters tend to credit surprise over sustained excellence. Murphy's franchise-record 97 wins in 2025 earned a repeat; a third win in a row demands a narrative that feels new, not familiar. The Brewers winning again is expected. A manager who overperforms projections, as Counsell might with a Cubs team that was picked lower, carries a built-in "exceeded expectations" story that voters historically reward.

Murphy's health could also factor in. Back surgery and hip surgery during the season, while admirable, could subtly work against him in the perception game. Voters may unconsciously question whether the coaching staff, rather than Murphy alone, drove results during recovery periods. This is unfair but consistent with how awards voting psychology operates.

Pat Murphy's NL Manager of the Year Price History Shows a Market Caught Between Legacy and Narrative

The three-day move from 38% to 30% is steep by Manager of the Year market standards, where candidates rarely swing more than a few points per week outside of October. The chart below shows whether this is a sharp break from a stable base or the acceleration of a longer decline.

If the floor at 27% holds, Murphy's current 30% price represents a market that still considers him the second-most-likely winner but no longer the co-favorite. The resolution date of December 8, 2026, means three full months of regular season and postseason baseball remain to shift these probabilities. A Brewers run to the World Series would make the voter-fatigue argument harder to sustain. A first-round exit would make it easy.

The core tension is straightforward. Murphy's résumé says he should be the favorite. The market says narrative momentum matters more than résumé at this stage of the race. At 30%, traders are pricing in a real but not dominant chance that voters will reward the same manager three years running. That price looks like a discount on credentials, and whether it corrects depends almost entirely on what happens in October.
