John Sununu's New Hampshire Senate Race Draws 10x Prediction Market Volume, and He's Still Priced at 19%

John Sununu's chances of winning the New Hampshire Senate race remain low in prediction markets despite a toss-up reclassification and a massive surge in trading activity. On September 18, the "New Hampshire Senate winner?" market recorded $153,064 in volume across 350 trades. The prior seven-day daily average was $14,051, making September 18 a 10.89x acceleration with $139,012 in absolute lift above baseline in a single session.

The Republican contract barely moved. It sits at 19%, unchanged over 24 hours. Democrat Chris Pappas holds 82% implied probability. Something drew enormous attention to this market without shifting the consensus price. The question is what, and whether the flat line reflects conviction or confusion.

30-Day Volume History for the New Hampshire Senate Race

The September 18 bar dwarfs every other day in this market's recent history. Before it, the largest single-day volume was $52,935 on September 15, meaning the latest spike was roughly 2.9 times even that elevated session. The entire prior seven days combined totaled $98,360. September 18 alone exceeded that by more than 55%.

Kalshi drove the majority of the dollar volume, contributing $96,197 across 123 trades. Polymarket added $56,867 across 227 trades, with a higher trade count but smaller average position size. That split suggests Kalshi attracted larger individual wagers while Polymarket drew more frequent, smaller bets.

Why Volume Increased

Several dated, sourced developments plausibly explain the attention spike, though timing alone cannot confirm which catalyzed specific trades.

First, the September 8 primaries set the general election matchup. Sununu secured the Republican nomination with Trump's endorsement, defeating Scott P. Brown. Pappas won the Democratic primary over Karishma Manzur. A clarified matchup typically triggers fresh positioning.

Second, the race was reclassified from "Lean Democratic" to "toss-up" by at least one analyst around September 15, which coincides with that earlier $52,935 volume day. The reclassification may have drawn attention that continued building into September 18.

Third, Axios reported on September 18 that the NRSC allocated $46.5 million toward coordinated Senate campaigns, including $5.3 million coordinated with Sununu in New Hampshire. Traders monitoring GOP resource allocation may have re-evaluated Sununu's viability.

Volume proves attention, not direction. The aggregate data cannot show whether the $153,064 represented primarily Republican YES buyers, Democratic NO sellers, or a roughly even split that left the price flat at 19%.

Contracts, Prices, and Where to Trade

The "New Hampshire Senate winner?" market offers contracts on multiple outcomes. The two leading positions:

  • Democrat (Chris Pappas): 82% implied probability
  • Republican (John Sununu): 19% implied probability

Across platforms, Republican pricing shows a modest spread. Polymarket lists it at 19%, Kalshi at 17%, and PredictIt at 22%. That 5-percentage-point gap between Kalshi and PredictIt is notable for a race this close to resolution (November 3, 2026), suggesting either different trader populations or varying fee structures influencing effective prices.

The Case Against Sununu at 19%

The strongest argument for a mispriced market is the toss-up reclassification itself. If a credible analyst believes the race is genuinely 50-50, then 19% represents a steep discount. Sununu carries a recognizable family name in New Hampshire politics (his father served as governor). Trump's endorsement locks in the Republican base. And $5.3 million in NRSC coordinated spending with Sununu in New Hampshire signals that national Republicans believe the seat is winnable.

New Hampshire's recent electoral history supports skepticism of easy Democratic holds. The state swings. Maggie Hassan won her 2016 Senate race by 1,017 votes. Kelly Ayotte won the governorship in 2024. A generic 82% Democratic hold assumption ignores that volatility.

The Case for Pappas at 82%

The counter-argument deserves genuine weight. Chris Pappas represented New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District for multiple terms and built statewide name recognition through repeated competitive races. New Hampshire has trended modestly Democratic in federal races since 2020. One analyst's toss-up call does not constitute polling consensus, and prediction markets aggregate a wider range of information than any single rating.

The flat Republican price despite 10x volume may itself be informative. If a massive influx of capital cannot push the contract above 19%, the market may be signaling that for every buyer betting on Sununu, a seller is willing to take the other side at the current price. That equilibrium, held under heavy volume, is a stronger signal than a lightly traded 19%.

It is also possible the volume spike reflected traders selling Republican contracts after re-evaluating the toss-up hype, banking on the gap between pundit classification and electoral fundamentals.

What Would Change This Price

Three developments could move the Republican contract materially higher. Public polling showing Sununu within 3 points of Pappas would force a repricing. A second or third analyst upgrading the race to toss-up would validate the first call. And evidence that NRSC money is flowing directly into New Hampshire ad buys would signal institutional commitment.

If early October polls show Pappas leading by 8 or more points, expect the Republican contract to compress toward its period low of 15%.
