- Traders are backing away from Fetterman as the Democrats' 2028 running mate after the report on his remarks to staff, leaving him a long shot.

Fetterman's 2028 Democratic VP Odds Fall From 26% to 14% After Intelligencer Report
John Fetterman's chances of becoming the 2028 Democratic vice presidential nominee fell from about 26% to 14% in three days on Polymarket. The drop followed coverage of a New York magazine Intelligencer report (May 21, 2026) that the Pennsylvania senator told senior staff he could be the party's 2028 VP pick. According to the report, his aides were stunned. It also cited CNN data showing his net approval among Pennsylvania Democrats down 108 points since 2023.

On Oct. 16, 2026, the market priced Fetterman at a 14% implied probability. That is the lowest level in the period tracked. The contract resolves on Aug. 25, 2028.
What the Fetterman Market Did After the May 21 Report
The Intelligencer report is the dated catalyst. It returned to wide circulation this week. HuffPost framed it as a "wild election claim" to staff. Mediaite reported that aides reacted with "Are you out of your f***ing mind?" The selloff lines up with this burst of coverage, but the sources do not establish that it was the only cause.
The report did more than relay the VP remark. It also described a shrinking inner circle. Adviser David "Dovi" Safier holds outsized influence, and a third chief of staff has departed, as Tampa Free Press summarized. Fetterman had reportedly discussed a presidential run as well.
Are There Polls for John Fetterman's 2028 VP Chances?
Our research found no public polling on the 2028 Democratic VP nomination. That leaves the market as the only live measure of this race.
The closest evidence is approval data. According to CNN figures cited by Intelligencer, Fetterman's net approval among Pennsylvania Democrats fell from +68 in 2023 to -40. That figure measures his standing in his home state. It does not measure his VP prospects.
Pennsylvania Democrats have added their own skepticism. In September, KYW Newsradio cited a Wall Street Journal story in which former staffers alleged he shirked duties. Rep. Brendan Boyle said he "cannot foresee any possibility of John Fetterman being the Democratic nominee in 2028." A 14% price is consistent with that erosion. It still assigns him a nonzero chance.
What Could Move Fetterman's VP Odds Next
Fetterman has dismissed past critical reporting as relying on disgruntled staffers. A direct response to the Intelligencer account, or a denial, is the most immediate test for the market. He has also insisted he will remain a Democrat despite Republican courting. Any shift on that question would bear directly on a Democratic VP contract.
Further sourced reporting on staff exits, or new Pennsylvania approval releases, could extend the slide. Traders tracking the full field can follow the 2028 Democratic VP nominee market. A recovery toward 26% would suggest the report is fading. A break below 14% would signal that the scrutiny is compounding. We could not confirm a scheduled date for any of these milestones.
