James Fishback Is Getting Attacked From Every Direction, So Why Are His Odds Doubling?

James Fishback is simultaneously fighting a $400,000 attack ad campaign funded by a Ted Cruz-aligned group called The Front Line, a residency-based lawsuit filed by Lt. Gov. Jay Collins seeking to remove him from the ballot entirely, and an expulsion from the Republican Party of Florida's official Sunshine State Showdown debate after he announced plans to attend a rival, unsanctioned event. The GOP rescinded his invitation in direct response.

By any conventional campaign logic, a candidate absorbing this volume of simultaneous fire should be collapsing. Instead, Fishback's implied probability of finishing second in the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary has climbed from 14% to 27% across Kalshi and Polymarket over the past three days, a 13-percentage-point gain. Kalshi currently prices him at 32%; Polymarket at 22%. The spread between platforms suggests active disagreement among bettors about the magnitude of his viability, but the direction is uniform: up.

No single confirmed catalyst within the last 72 hours explains the full move. The attack ads, ballot challenge, and debate ban all predate the spike by several days or weeks. The most plausible read is that the market is absorbing the cumulative picture and concluding that Fishback survives as a default second-place finisher in a field that is failing to consolidate against frontrunner Byron Donalds.

What the Florida GOP Governor Primary Field Actually Looks Like for Fishback's 2nd-Place Bet

This is not a market on whether Fishback wins the nomination. This is a market on whether he finishes second in a primary where one candidate, Rep. Byron Donalds, appears to have locked up first place. The latest Tyson Group poll, reported this month, puts Donalds at 48% with $90 million raised across his campaign operation. No other candidate breaks double digits.

That same poll shows Collins at 9% and Fishback at 8%, a statistical tie for second. Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner sits at 4%. Roughly 26% of Republican respondents remain undecided. Collins has positioned himself as the "lone viable Donalds alternative," declaring on a campaign call that "this is a two-person race in the primary." But his fundraising is a fraction of Donalds' total, and he has not secured an endorsement from Gov. Ron DeSantis, who appointed him lieutenant governor in August 2025.

The field structure is what makes 27% for Fishback coherent. Second place in this race requires roughly 10-12% of the vote. Collins has the institutional positioning but not the polling separation. Renner is an afterthought. The 26% undecided bloc is large enough that a candidate with name recognition and a combative public profile could absorb enough of it to edge past Collins.

Fishback's Florida Primary Odds in Real Time

Fishback's current 27% implied probability for second place represents a near-doubling from his period low of 14%. For readers unfamiliar with prediction market mechanics, 27% means the market collectively assigns roughly a one-in-four chance that Fishback finishes as the runner-up when ballots are counted on August 18.

The 10-point spread between Kalshi (32%) and Polymarket (22%) is worth monitoring. When platforms diverge by that margin on the same binary outcome, it often reflects different trader populations pricing in different information or risk tolerances. If that spread narrows upward, with Polymarket converging toward Kalshi's higher number, it would confirm a broader consensus forming around Fishback's second-place viability.

The Case Against Fishback: Why This Market Could Be Wrong

The strongest argument against Fishback finishing second requires taking the ballot challenge seriously. Collins' residency lawsuit argues Fishback has not lived in Florida for the constitutionally required seven years. A Tallahassee judge scheduled a two-day hearing for July 21 to adjudicate the claim. If the court rules against Fishback, he is removed from the ballot entirely, and the 27% contract goes to zero.

Even if Fishback survives the legal challenge, the $400,000 ad campaign from The Front Line, which targets Fishback over statements the group characterizes as antisemitic, could erode his support among Republican primary voters who are still forming opinions. The 26% undecided share is opportunity and risk in equal measure. Those voters could just as easily break toward Collins if the attack ads land effectively in the final three weeks before August 18.

Collins also retains structural advantages that polls may understate. As sitting lieutenant governor, he has access to the governor's office apparatus, statewide name recognition among party insiders, and the implicit association with DeSantis even without a formal endorsement. If Collins consolidates the anti-Donalds lane in the final stretch, Fishback's ceiling drops fast.

Tracking the Price Move Into Resolution

The three-day price chart below traces how Fishback's odds evolved from 14% to 27%. Look for inflection points that may correspond to the Tyson Group poll release or news cycles around the ballot hearing.

This market resolves on August 18, when Florida holds its primary election. Between now and then, three binary events will determine whether 27% is cheap or expensive: the outcome of the residency challenge (potentially already decided at the July 21 hearing), the measurable impact of The Front Line's ad spend on Fishback's polling numbers, and whether Collins can convert his institutional backing into actual voter movement.

The market's current thesis is that Fishback survives all three threats and benefits from a fractured field where no alternative to Donalds can pull away. That thesis is defensible, given the Tyson Group numbers showing a one-point gap between Collins and Fishback. But it rests on Fishback remaining on the ballot. If the court ruled against him at the July 21 hearing and that information has not yet been priced in, 27% is wildly overvalued. If he cleared the legal hurdle, 27% may still be too low for a candidate who is effectively tied for second with three weeks of free media ahead of him.
