Padres' NL Pennant Odds Fall to 6% After Cubs Wild Card Sweep
Markets cut San Diego from 16% to 6% in three days despite a 17-3 closing run. The No. 4 seed now faces home-field disadvantage every remaining round.

San Diego Padres' NL Championship Chances Drop to 6% Even After Eliminating the Cubs
The San Diego Padres now have roughly a 6% chance of winning the National League pennant, according to prediction markets on Kalshi and Polymarket, down from 16% three days ago. The 10-percentage-point drop came despite the Padres sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card round and closing the regular season with a 17-of-20 run. San Diego is in the NL Division Series as the No. 4 seed, facing home-field disadvantage in every remaining round.

The Padres touched a period low of 4% before recovering slightly. Kalshi currently shows 5%, while Polymarket sits at 6%. The direction is unambiguous: the market is fading San Diego despite the best late-season run in the NL.
How a 17-3 Run and a Wild Card Win Failed to Move the Needle Upward
Context makes this repricing genuinely puzzling. San Diego clinched its third consecutive postseason berth on September 24 by beating the Dodgers 4-2, then closed the regular season going 41-18 over the final 59 games. The Cubs elimination in the Wild Card Series, reported by Axios on October 1, removed one hurdle and should have, in theory, nudged the probability higher.
Instead, the opposite happened. The implied probability nearly halved. The market is telling us that clearing the first round was already priced in and that the real information arrived when the full Division Series and Championship Series matchups crystallized. A team with a 50% chance of winning each remaining best-of-five or best-of-seven series only has roughly a 25% probability of clearing both rounds. For a No. 4 seed facing higher-ranked opponents with home-field advantage, the per-series win probability likely sits well below 50%, which compounds the discount quickly.
The NL Bracket Math Explains What the Padres Are Up Against
As the No. 4 seed in the NL, San Diego faces the steepest possible road to the pennant. The Division Series pits them against a top seed with home-field advantage, and a win there would set up a Championship Series likely against another division winner. Every round adds a multiplicative discount. Assign the Padres a 30% chance of winning the NLDS and a 25% chance of winning the NLCS, and the combined probability lands at 7.5%, close to where the market currently sits.
The bracket is doing the work the streak cannot undo. Hot streaks in baseball carry less predictive power over a seven-game playoff series than casual fans tend to believe. Pitching matchups, bullpen depth, and home-field splits matter more once the sample size shrinks to four or seven games. A 17-3 run over 20 regular-season games against a mix of opponents tells you less about postseason survival than how well a rotation stacks up against a specific opponent's lineup.
The Case for the Padres Being Undervalued at 6%
The strongest argument against the market: roster construction and postseason experience. New owners José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones, whose purchase was unanimously approved by MLB owners in August 2026, have publicly committed to a World Series title. That rhetoric alone does not change on-field probability, but it signals the front office was unlikely to have held back at the trade deadline, meaning San Diego's roster may be better built for October than its seeding suggests.
This is also the franchise's third straight playoff appearance. Core players have been through high-leverage situations before, and the Cubs series gave them live-game reps that a bye-week team does not get. If the Padres' true NLDS win probability is closer to 40% rather than 30%, the pennant probability jumps to roughly 10% to 12%, making the current 6% look like a discount.
What Would Need to Change for the Market to Reprice Upward
The catalyst for a move higher is straightforward: a Game 1 or Game 2 win in the Division Series. Taking an early lead in a best-of-five shifts the conditional probability math sharply. A team up 2-0 in a best-of-five historically wins the series more than 85% of the time, which would roughly triple the Padres' pennant implied probability overnight.
Conversely, losing Games 1 and 2 on the road would push San Diego toward the 4% floor the market already tested. The next 72 hours will compress the Padres' entire season narrative into two or three games.
