Cam Schlittler holds an 87% implied probability of winning the 2026 AL Cy Young Award on prediction markets after his 19 starts allowing one run or fewer set a new Yankees franchise record, surpassing the previous mark of 18 shared by Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford, and Jack Chesbro. Kalshi prices him at 86% and Polymarket at 88%, up 11 percentage points in three days.
Cam Schlittler's AL Cy Young Chances Hit 87% After Yankees Franchise Record
The record-setting start came September 3 against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. Schlittler pitched eight innings, allowed two hits and one earned run, walked nobody, and struck out nine. The Yankees won 6-3 in 10 innings. That outing was the 19th time this season he held an opponent to one run or fewer, eclipsing marks that had stood for decades.
The three-day move from 76% to 87% did not arrive on a single viral clip or a no-hitter. It was the market catching up to the cumulative weight of a season-long performance: a 2.04 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, 210 strikeouts, and a road ERA of 1.14 across 16 away starts and 103 innings. The probability sat as low as 75% during this period before the record crystallized the case. When the data point changed from "Schlittler is very good" to "Schlittler is historically better than Guidry, Ford, and Chesbro by this measure," the market repriced.
What Schlittler's 19 Low-Run Starts Mean for the 2026 AL Cy Young Race
The franchise record is not just a trivia line. It functions as a structural moat. Cy Young voters rely on a full-season body of work, and Schlittler has banked 19 elite outings with roughly four weeks of regular season remaining. Any challenger would need to match that volume of dominance in a compressed window, which is arithmetically implausible. A pitcher with, say, 14 such starts entering September would need to be nearly perfect in every remaining outing and still trail Schlittler's total.
The 1.14 road ERA removes the home-park objection. Yankee Stadium is a hitter-friendly environment, so dominance there could theoretically be discounted. But Schlittler has been more dominant away from the Bronx. That number, across 103 road innings, places him in historically rare company.
His peripheral metrics confirm the ERA is earned, not lucky. Through the second Cy Young poll in late May, he led the AL in WHIP (0.86), batting average against (.183), fWAR (2.7), and FIP (1.78). By the third poll in late June, he had solidified his lead. His reliance on fastballs (roughly 90.8% of pitches) has drawn attention from analysts as a paradigm-shifting approach, but the results have silenced skeptics.
The Case Against Schlittler: What Lives in the 13%
An 87% probability means 13 out of every 100 scenarios see someone else win. That is not negligible. The most realistic paths to a Schlittler loss fall into three categories.
Injury. Four weeks of regular-season starts remain before the November 12 resolution date. A significant arm injury, even one that does not require surgery, could limit his remaining starts enough to let a competitor close the gap. Schlittler is a 25-year-old in his second full MLB season, and his heavy fastball usage puts stress on a relatively young arm. This is probably the single largest risk the market is pricing.
A competitor's historic September. Search interest points to a Schlittler-versus-Cease matchup as the most-watched rivalry. If Dylan Cease or another AL starter reels off five or six consecutive dominant outings while Schlittler posts good but not elite numbers, voters could face a narrative pull. Historically, Cy Young voters have occasionally rewarded late-season surges over full-season consistency, though it is rare when the frontrunner's lead is this wide.
Voter fatigue or team-record bias. Schlittler's 12-6 win-loss record is solid but unspectacular. If the Yankees fade down the stretch (their offense has struggled without Aaron Judge), some voters might penalize him. Modern Cy Young voters weigh ERA, strikeouts, and WAR more heavily than wins, but that bias has not entirely disappeared.
None of these scenarios is probable in isolation. Combined, 13% feels like a reasonable estimate for tail risk, perhaps even slightly generous to the field.

The Kalshi-Polymarket spread is tight: 86% versus 88%. That two-point gap suggests both platforms are pricing off the same information with minimal structural disagreement. The award resolves November 12, giving voters time to weigh the full regular season and any postseason narrative, though the Cy Young vote is officially a regular-season award.
The key dates to monitor are Schlittler's remaining starts. Each outing that extends the low-run streak adds incremental probability. Each rough outing offers the market a reason to trim. But the math strongly favors Schlittler: even two or three mediocre starts would leave him with a historically dominant season, and his competitors would still need to produce something extraordinary to close the gap.
