Marine Le Pen Is Back, and She Just Destroyed Jordan Bardella's Presidential Odds

Three days ago, Jordan Bardella was the Rassemblement National's presumptive presidential candidate, polling at 31% among French voters and priced at 22% across major prediction markets. Then Marine Le Pen walked back into the race.

On July 7, the Paris Court of Appeal upheld Le Pen's conviction for embezzling €2.8 million in EU funds but reduced her prison sentence to three years, with two suspended, and imposed a 45-month ban from holding public office, 30 months of which are also suspended. The net effect: Le Pen is legally eligible to run in April 2027. Within hours, she confirmed her candidacy, pledging to appeal the ruling to France's highest court while campaigning without restriction.

Bardella now sits at 7% implied probability to win the presidency, down from 22% just 72 hours earlier. That 15-point collapse wasn't caused by a scandal, a policy misstep, or a rival coalition forming against him. It was caused by his own mentor reclaiming the stage he was built to hold in her absence.

The political logic is clear. Bardella's ascent within the RN was always conditional. Le Pen faced the real possibility of a ban from public office, and the party needed a viable alternative. Bardella, 31 years old, telegenic, and already serving as party president, was the obvious understudy. His 31% polling number reflected the combined support of RN voters who backed whoever carried the party's flag. The moment Le Pen returned, that support reverted to its original owner.

Bardella's Presidential Odds Crater 15 Percentage Points in 72 Hours

The speed of the repricing tells the story. Bardella's probability didn't erode gradually as Le Pen's legal situation evolved over weeks. It collapsed in a concentrated burst between July 7 and July 10, the window between the court ruling and Le Pen's formal announcement.

A move from 22% to 7% represents a destruction of more than two-thirds of Bardella's implied win probability. At 7%, prediction markets are pricing him as a longshot, closer to figures like Bruno Retailleau (polling at 6%) and Éric Zemmour (3%) than to the frontrunner tier occupied by Le Pen, Édouard Philippe (15%), and Jean-Luc Mélenchon (13%). The platform-level breakdown reinforces the consensus: Kalshi prices Bardella at 8%, Polymarket at 2%, and PredictIt at 12%. The spread across platforms is wide, but the directional verdict is unanimous. No platform still treats him as a serious contender.

The core proof point is the divergence between polls and markets. Bardella leads French presidential surveys at 31% among voters. His market probability just fell to 7%. That gap is not a pricing error. It reflects the market's conviction that Bardella will not be the RN's nominee. Polls measure hypothetical matchups; prediction markets price the probability of actual outcomes. Traders are betting that Le Pen, not Bardella, will be the name on the ballot.

One Party, One Ticket: Why Le Pen and Bardella Can't Both Win the Race

The RN does not hold primaries. Candidate selection is controlled by the party leadership, which in practice means Le Pen herself. Bardella serves as party president, but Le Pen's reassertion of control over the presidential ticket was immediate and unchallenged. There is no mechanism by which Bardella runs against Le Pen for the RN nomination, and no precedent for the party fielding competing candidates.

This structural reality is what the market is pricing. Two RN candidates splitting the far-right vote would guarantee neither reaches the second round. With Philippe consolidating the center-right at 15%, Mélenchon holding the left at 13%, and Attal anchoring Macronism at 10%, the RN cannot afford a divided first-round showing. The party will field one candidate, and the court's ruling made clear that candidate will be Le Pen.

Bardella's remaining 7% probability likely reflects two residual scenarios: Le Pen's appeal to France's highest court somehow results in a reinstated ban before April 2027, or her health or legal complications force a late withdrawal. Neither is impossible, but the market assigns them a combined weight of only 7%.

The Case for Bardella: What Would Need to Change

The strongest bull case for Bardella requires Le Pen to exit the race involuntarily. If France's Cour de cassation reviews the appeal on an accelerated timeline and reinstates the full five-year ban from public office, Bardella becomes the default RN standard-bearer overnight, and his probability likely snaps back above 20%. His polling strength is real and durable. A June 2026 survey from election-presidentielle-francaise-2027.fr places him at 31%, 16 points ahead of Philippe, the second-place candidate. No other French politician commands that kind of first-round support.

There is also an age argument. Bardella is a generational figure in French politics, and some RN strategists may calculate that Le Pen's conviction, her ankle monitor, and her decades of political baggage make Bardella a cleaner general-election candidate against a centrist opponent in the second round. But this argument only matters if Le Pen voluntarily steps aside, a scenario for which there is zero evidence. Her post-ruling statement was emphatic: she intends to campaign and win.

Resolution and What to Watch

This market resolves on April 30, 2027, after the second round of the French presidential election. Between now and then, the single most important variable for Bardella's odds is the Cour de cassation's handling of Le Pen's appeal. If the court declines to hear it or upholds the reduced sentence, Le Pen runs, and Bardella likely remains a single-digit afterthought. If the court reinstates a full ban, the RN's presidential ticket reverts to Bardella within days.

At 7%, the market is not pricing Bardella as a viable candidate. It is pricing him as an insurance policy for a party whose real candidate just returned from the legal dead. That assessment, given the available evidence, is correct.
