Will Bitcoin hit $85,000 in October? Market odds fall to 62%

Bitcoin needs a gain of roughly 3-4% to reach $85,000 before October ends. It traded near $82,000 on Oct. 16 after briefly falling below $80,000 on Oct. 15, when hot US inflation data revived expectations of a Fed rate hike. On Polymarket, the "↑ 85,000" outcome in "What price will Bitcoin hit in October?" fell from 82% to 62% over three days.

Sources disagree on timing. Some coverage places Bitcoin's recent peak near $87.3K in October, while others date the peak above $87,000 to late September and put October's top near $86,600. The contract's 62% price indicates traders do not treat $85,000 as already reached under the market's resolution rules. Readers should check the contract's resolution wording to see which price source and time window count.

Hot CPI and PPI data, ETF outflows and a tech selloff hit Bitcoin

The selloff started with the September CPI report on Oct. 14. Headline inflation came in at 3.7% and core at 2.6%, both hotter than expected. CME FedWatch moved to roughly 30-34% odds of a hike at the October meeting and about 87% odds of a hike by year-end. That reversed the earlier easing in hike expectations. A weak September jobs report (+29,000) had cut October hike odds to about 17%.

The PPI release on Oct. 15 added to the pressure. Producer prices rose 1.3% month over month and 6.3% year over year. Bitcoin dropped below $81,000 that day, according to crypto.news, then briefly dipped under $80,000. About $483M in BTC and ETH futures positions were liquidated during the move.

Fund flows and equities also weighed on the price. Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost about $262M on Oct. 14, and combined Bitcoin and Ether ETFs shed $391M as a one-day rebound in flows reversed, according to Bitcoin.com News. Korea's Kospi fell about 7.5-8% on Oct. 15 in a broad tech and AI selloff. The sources link these factors to the drop by timing but do not measure how much each one contributed.

Buyers stepped in quickly. Bitcoin climbed back to $82,500 within two hours of the sub-$80,000 dip as Asian chip stocks recovered, CoinDesk reported. Even after the bounce, Bitcoin remains on track for a second straight losing week.

What could decide the $85,000 target: the Oct 27-28 FOMC meeting

Technical traders are watching support at $80,000-$80,400, with the 50-day EMA near $80.3K. Resistance sits at $84,000 and $85,000. A daily close below $80,000 would leave the 200-day EMA near $75K as the next reference point and push the target further out of reach. A recovery through $84,000 would put $85,000 within one strong session.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at the IMF and World Bank meetings on Oct. 16. Remarks that play down a near-term hike could ease the rate fears behind the selloff, as NY Fed President John Williams' comments did on Oct. 13, when Bitcoin rose toward $84,000. Live pricing for every strike is on the Bitcoin October price targets market page.

The deciding event is the FOMC meeting on Oct. 27-28. A hike, or a decision to hold paired with a hawkish signal, would leave Bitcoin about three trading days to cover the remaining distance before the contract resolves on Nov. 1.
