Will the US Take a Stake in Unusual Machines? Pentagon Talks Are Reported, but No Deal Is Signed

As of Oct. 16, 2026, the US government has no confirmed stake in Unusual Machines (NYSE American: UMAC), and Polymarket's "Which companies will the US take a stake in this year?" market prices one at 28%. The Wall Street Journal reported on May 27 that the Pentagon was in talks to fund the drone components maker, possibly through debt and equity that could give Washington ownership. No agreement had been signed, and the Defense Department was still conducting due diligence. Performance Drone Works and Neros Technologies were also part of the talks, and the Office of Strategic Capital was involved.

The stock market took the report as a win. UMAC shares jumped at least 25% on the news, with some coverage putting the intraday gain above 65%. Traders on Polymarket now see it differently. The Unusual Machines contract fell from 42% to 28% over three days, a drop of 14 percentage points. The 28% on Oct. 16 is the lowest price in the period tracked.

Why Unusual Machines' Odds Fell While Its Shares Rose

The two reactions measure different things. UMAC's share price reflects the chance of federal money in any form. The prediction market resolves only on an actual US equity stake by Dec. 31, 2026. The WSJ's wording, that funding could "possibly" include equity, leaves room for a completed deal that is all debt and would not count.

The timing also matters. The WSJ report is nearly five months old. The 14-point drop happened in the three days before Oct. 16, and we could not establish a specific Unusual Machines development that caused it.

Consensus prediction market price

Other federal equity moves surfaced during that same stretch. The Trump administration doubled its equity stake in GlobalFoundries and partnered with the chipmaker on a new plant. The government is taking a 40% equity stake in Anduril's Arsenal-2 complex. Separately, the FAA is seeking ownership of an air traffic AI company.

Next to those deals, talks that remain unsigned since May look weaker. That reading is an interpretation of the price, not a confirmed motive.

The completed deals also show the risks. Taxpayers bought USA Rare Earth at $17.17, and the shares now trade near $12. Losses like that could make officials more careful about structuring new equity deals.

What Could Move Unusual Machines' Stake Odds Next

Any of these would reprice the contract:

  • A signed agreement or official announcement. A Pentagon or company disclosure of terms that includes equity would reverse the slide. A Form 8-K from Unusual Machines would be the likeliest first public record.
  • Due diligence results. If the Defense Department finishes its review and moves toward closing, the odds should recover. If the talks end, Neros or Performance Drone Works could get the deal instead.
  • The deal structure. Warrants or a share issuance to the Office of Strategic Capital would count as a stake. A loan alone would not.
  • Conflict-of-interest scrutiny. Donald Trump Jr. is a shareholder and advisory board member at Unusual Machines. On May 6, Sen. Elizabeth Warren pressed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about a $12.8 million DoD contract awarded to the company and asked for a list of all its DoD contracts. More pressure along those lines could slow or reshape any equity deal.

No public deadline for the talks has been reported. The only fixed date is the market's Dec. 31 resolution. Prices for the other candidates are on the US government company stakes odds page.
