- Traders see gas above $4.50 on Election Day as a long shot, since pump prices have stalled despite crude near $95.
Will Gas Prices Be Above $4.50 on Election Day 2026? Market Falls to 10%
Gas prices are unlikely to top $4.50 on Election Day unless a supply shock hits. AAA's national average for regular gasoline was $4.33 on Oct 15, 2026, about 17 cents short of the threshold, and Election Day is Nov. 3, 19 days after that reading.
Traders have repriced accordingly. Kalshi's Above 4.50 contract in the US gas prices on Election Day market fell from 18% to 10%.

Why the Above 4.50 Market Dropped: AAA's $4.33 Reading and the 17-Cent Gap
AAA's mid-October report, titled "Gas Prices Not Budging Much as Crude Oil Remains High", shows the national average at $4.33. That is down from $4.36 a week earlier and flat against a month earlier, while WTI crude settled near $95 a barrel. Elevated crude has not lifted retail prices. Drivers still pay about $1.27 more than a year ago, according to Yahoo Finance, but the trend points sideways, not up.
The arithmetic is hard for Yes holders. Resolving Above 4.50 requires a gain of about 17 cents in the 19 days between the Oct. 15 reading and Nov. 3. The 2026 peak was $4.56 on May 21, during the U.S.-Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz closure, so $4.50 sits only 6 cents below this year's high. We could not establish that the flat AAA reading drove the market move on any specific day.
The market now sits below a recent outside estimate. The Political Group, in a forecast, had put the chance of a national average above $4.50 on Election Day at 14% in an earlier version. It cited President Trump's pledge of no strikes on Iran before the midterms as a cap on near-term risk.
What Could Push Gas Above $4.50 Before Election Day
The Political Group names three upside risks: a Gulf Coast hurricane, a refinery outage, or tanker attacks. Any one of them would tighten supply as crude trades near $95. Southern California shows the opposite pressure for now: prices there are decreasing at a quicker pace, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Policy offers little near-term relief or risk. Trump signed an order waiving red-dyed diesel restrictions, and GOP lawmakers say there is no silver bullet without a resolution of the Iran conflict and a reopening of the Strait. Prices have also stayed above $4 for a record number of days in a calendar year, ABC News reported.
The next checkpoint is AAA's daily national average. A move from $4.33 toward $4.40 would make the 17-cent gap look closable. Another flat or falling week would leave Above 4.50 depending on a shock before Nov. 3.
