Blakeman vs Hochul: Trading in the New York Governor Market Hit 4.21x Its Weekly Average

The latest Blakeman vs Hochul poll, a Republican internal survey reported Oct 20, shows Gov. Kathy Hochul ahead 50.3% to 45.9%, and trading in the "New York Governor winner?" market jumped the same day. Volume on Oct 20 reached $202,122 across 701 trades, against a prior seven-day average of $47,967 per day: a 4.21x multiplier. Independent polls and the RealClearPolitics average still show Hochul well ahead.

Bruce Blakeman's contract slipped from about 7% to 6% as of Oct 21, a drop of 1 percentage point. Our sources show the poll and the volume arrived on the same day; they cannot show who traded, which side they took, or why. The New York governor winner market page carries live prices.

How Oct 20 Compares With the Last 30 Days of Blakeman Market Volume

The method is simple: add the daily dollar volume for Oct 13 through Oct 19 ($335,767.04), divide by seven ($47,966.72), then divide Oct 20 volume ($202,122.38) by that average. The result is 4.21x.

Oct 20 is the largest completed day in the 29 days of observed history, about 1.97x the next-highest day, Oct 14, at $102,627.83. That is not an all-time record: the market's launch date is not in our data, so earlier activity may have been larger.

The more unusual detail is trade count. Oct 20 logged 701 trades, slightly below the baseline average of about 730 per day. Dollars rose roughly fourfold while the number of trades did not, which implies average trade size jumped from about $66 to about $288. That is arithmetic on supplied totals, not evidence of who placed those trades.

Limits apply. The baseline includes the Oct 14 spike, which raises the average and makes the multiplier more conservative. The figure covers one market, one seven-day window, and a mix of venues, with no trader-level data.

Why Did Trading Volume Spike on Blakeman vs Hochul?

The clearest dated development is the internal poll. On Message Inc. conducted it for Saritha Komatireddy, the Republican candidate for attorney general, and the New York Post reported it Oct 20 as an exclusive. Outlets including TheYeshivaWorld and Matzav amplified the 4.4-point margin under "race tightens" framing.

The same news cycle carried campaign coverage pegged to the calendar. City & State reported both candidates pressing kitchen-table issues two weeks from Election Day: Blakeman pledged to halve utility bills by rolling back clean energy surcharges and lifting Hochul's data center moratorium, while Hochul announced 16 arrests in a staged-car-crash insurance fraud case. NBC New York framed the race as heating up with 15 days to go.

The surge was concentrated on one venue. Kalshi handled $198,659 across 618 trades on Oct 20, about 98% of dollar volume; Polymarket handled $3,464 across 83 trades.

Timing supports an attention explanation but does not prove causation. If the volume reflected buyers betting on a tighter race, the price did not show it: Blakeman fell 1 percentage point. An internal poll is commissioned by a campaign and released at its discretion, which argues for giving it less weight than independent surveys.

Are There Polls for Bruce Blakeman (R) in the New York Governor Race?

Yes. The Republican internal poll has Hochul at 50.3% and Blakeman at 45.9%. Independent polling is far less favorable to Blakeman: Quinnipiac has Hochul up 19 points, Marist puts her at 53%, and the RealClearPolitics average shows her ahead by about 12.8 points. The latest Siena poll found about a third of voters did not know Blakeman.

The market's 6% price is consistent with the independent numbers, not the internal one. A win probability and a polling margin measure different things: a 4.4-point deficit two weeks out describes vote share, while 6% describes how often traders expect Blakeman to finish first. Campaign finances also weigh on that judgment, with Blakeman reporting about $178,000 in cash on hand against more than $18 million for Hochul.

What Could Keep Blakeman Market Activity Elevated or Make It Fade

New independent polls, or public rebuttals of the On Message survey, are the most direct test of whether the tightening narrative holds. Early voting begins the weekend after Oct 20, and the Nov 3 vote sets a hard deadline for attention.

The Oct 14 spike of $102,627.83 did not hold as a new baseline, which shows these surges can fade. Readers can recheck the finding by pulling daily volume for Oct 13 through Oct 20 and repeating the division: if Oct 21 and later days stay well above $47,967, the attention outlasted one poll.
