GDPNow Trimmed to 3.5% on Housing Starts, but Nowcasts Remain Above 2.5%

The data change behind the move was small. GDPNow's Oct 20 revision took one-tenth of a point off its estimate after housing starts fell, as Finks reported. Newsquawk called tenth-of-a-point revisions "routine maintenance rather than signal." Goldman saw the same housing figures and left its 3.3% call unchanged.

Each tracker still clears the 2.5% threshold, though by different margins:

  • GDPNow (3.5%): about 1.0 point above
  • Goldman Sachs (3.3%): about 0.8 point above
  • NY Fed Nowcast (2.7%): about 0.2 point above

The NY Fed figure leaves the thinnest cushion. Its Oct 16 reading of 2.67% (reported as 2.7%) was up 0.1 point from 2.65% on Oct 9, per the New York Fed. Our sources do not explain why the market's implied probability fell roughly 8 percentage points while the trackers moved by a tenth or less.

Net Exports and the Oct 29 BEA Advance Estimate Are the Next Test

The BEA advance estimate, due Oct 29 at 8:30 a.m. EDT, will settle the question. A print above 2.5% would match all three trackers and support the higher prices seen earlier in the week. A miss would suggest the market's discount reflected a risk the nowcasts underweighted.

Net exports pose the main risk. GDPNow already carries a drag of about 2.7 points from trade. Atlas Analytics forecast only 1.5% growth on Oct 11, citing a sharply widening trade deficit. Survey views from August were split near the line, with both the Philadelphia Fed SPF and Bloomberg's economist poll at a 2.5% median.

Before release day, watch whether the remaining GDPNow and NY Fed updates hold their cushions above 2.5%. Price changes across every growth bracket are on the US Q3 2026 GDP growth market page.
