Sam Forstag Is Polling Ahead in MT-01, So Why Are Markets Backing Aaron Flint?

The most recent public poll of Montana's 1st Congressional District shows Democrat Sam Forstag leading Republican Aaron Flint by 2 points, 45% to 43%, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted September 9-10, 2026. Inside Elections shifted its MT-01 rating toward Democrats on October 1. Three nonpartisan race raters have now moved the district in the same direction, per the DCCC.

Prediction markets are telling a flatly different story. On both Kalshi and Polymarket, Flint's implied probability of winning the seat sits at 78%, up 10 percentage points in three days. That gap between the polling consensus and the market consensus is unusually wide for a House race this close to Election Day, and it demands an explanation.

The contradiction is not academic. One of these signals is wrong. Either the polls are understating Republican strength in a district Donald Trump carried twice, or the market is mispricing a race where the fundamentals have moved demonstrably toward the Democrat. The next four weeks will resolve the question, but right now the disagreement itself is the story.

Aaron Flint's Prediction Market Odds Have Jumped 10 Points in MT-01

Flint's win probability on the MT-01 House winner market climbed from 68% to 78% over approximately three days, a move that registers as a breakout in a congressional-level contract.

Consensus prediction market price

The swing is even more pronounced when measured from the period low: Flint traded as low as 60% before rallying 18 percentage points to the current level. No confirmed public catalyst, such as a new poll, endorsement, or debate performance, clearly accounts for the timing of the surge. House GOP Whip Tom Emmer's public comments about concentrating spending in districts with the "biggest return," reported by Axios on October 5, could signal that Republican operatives view MT-01 as winnable enough to warrant investment. But linking that report directly to the three-day price move would be speculation.

When no single catalyst is visible, the most honest explanation is that the move reflects a change in how market participants weigh structural factors (partisanship, turnout modeling, candidate quality) rather than any single piece of breaking news.

Current MT-01 Odds: Where Aaron Flint and Sam Forstag Stand Today

Flint is priced at 78% on both Kalshi and Polymarket, implying that traders collectively believe he has roughly a three-in-four chance of winning on November 4. Forstag's implied probability is approximately 22%.

In plain terms, a 78% probability means the market expects Flint to win in about four out of every five scenarios. It does not mean the race is a blowout. A candidate with a 22% implied chance of winning is far from a long shot. For context, 22% is roughly the probability of rolling a 1 or 2 on a standard die. Events with those odds happen regularly.

One important distinction: prediction markets aggregate money-weighted conviction, not polling samples. A single trader placing a large position can move a thinly traded House race contract more than a poll of 600 likely voters would move the RealClearPolitics average. That asymmetry matters when interpreting the gap.

Are There Polls for the Aaron Flint vs. Sam Forstag MT-01 Race?

Yes, and they favor the Democrat. The September 9-10 Public Policy Polling survey is the most recent publicly available data, showing Forstag at 45% and Flint at 43%. The 2-point margin falls within a typical survey's margin of error, so the poll is better described as showing a statistical tie with Forstag holding a slight edge.

Beyond topline numbers, the race-rating ecosystem supports the polling signal. Inside Elections moved MT-01 toward Democrats on October 1. The fact that three nonpartisan raters have now shifted in the same direction is consistent with the PPP poll, not with the 78% market price.

Polling in Montana House races has historically been sparse. MT-01 is not a district that attracts the volume of survey work that a Senate race or a presidential swing state generates. That scarcity gives any single poll outsized influence, and it also means the market may be discounting the poll as a one-off rather than treating it as the latest data point in a trend.

The Case Against the Market: Why Forstag Could Win MT-01

If you take prediction markets at face value, Forstag is a long shot. But the strongest case for his candidacy is built on evidence, not hope.

First, the polling. A Democrat polling at 45% in a district Trump won is not performing like a sacrificial candidate. Forstag's profile as a smokejumper and union leader gives him a crossover appeal that generic Democratic nominees in rural Western districts rarely possess. His campaign has leaned into physical risk and blue-collar credentials, themes that resonate in a state where wildfire management is a kitchen-table issue.

Second, the institutional signals. When Inside Elections and other raters shift a district toward one party, they are typically responding to private polling, fundraising data, and on-the-ground reporting that may not yet be public. Three separate raters moving in the same direction reduces the chance of an idiosyncratic error.

Third, Flint's primary. He won the Republican nomination with just 50.1% of the vote on June 2, according to Smarter.Vote. A nominee who barely clears 50% in his own primary may face consolidation problems in a general election, particularly if the losing faction stays home.

The market's counter to all of this is structural partisanship. MT-01 leans Republican, and midterm turnout patterns tend to favor the party out of the White House. The NRCC's early investment in Flint, adding him to the MAGA Majority program back in April, signals that national Republicans identified this seat as one to protect long before the polling tightened.

What Resolves This Disagreement

The MT-01 House winner market resolves on November 4, 2026. Between now and then, several developments could close the polling-market gap in one direction or the other.

If new polling confirms or expands Forstag's lead, Flint's market price should compress. A second survey showing the Democrat ahead by 3 or more points would make the current 78% pricing difficult to defend on fundamentals alone. Conversely, if a poll shows Flint ahead, the market will look prescient.

Spending patterns will also matter. Emmer's comments about focusing resources on high-return districts could translate into a late advertising blitz for Flint, which would improve his odds in a low-information race where many voters are still persuadable.

For those tracking the race in real time, the MT-01 House winner odds page provides live pricing across platforms. The current 78% price is the market's best guess, but with polls and raters lined up on the other side, this is one of the most genuinely uncertain House races on the board.
