Utah Is 3-0 and Blowing People Out, So Why Did Their Undefeated Season Odds Just Drop 8 Percentage Points?
Utah's undefeated season odds on Kalshi and Polymarket have fallen from 24% to 16% even as the Utes opened 2026 with three straight blowouts, outscoring opponents 142-24. The Utes demolished Idaho 66-14, beat Arkansas 43-10, and shut out rival Utah State 33-0 under first-year head coach Morgan Scalley. Quarterback Devon Dampier has thrown for 690 yards and the defense has yet to allow a second-half touchdown.
None of that stopped the market from repricing. Kalshi currently prices the contract at 15%, while Polymarket sits at 18%. The period low was 15%, meaning the contract is trading within a point of its floor.

The scoreboard says dominant. The market is pricing something the wins are not showing, and that something is the schedule wall ahead.
Utah's Big 12 Schedule Is the Real Opponent: Here's What the Market Is Actually Pricing
Utah opens Big 12 play on September 26 against Iowa State, a program that went 10-4 last season and won the Big 12 Championship Game in 2024. The Cyclones represent a categorical upgrade in difficulty over Idaho, Arkansas (a rebuilding SEC program that just lost 45-17 to Georgia), and Utah State.
The rest of the conference slate explains the sell-off. Utah faces Kansas, Colorado, and a rivalry game at BYU on November 7, all within a conference that distributed parity more aggressively after its 2024 expansion. No Big 12 team ran the table in 2025. The expanded 16-team format means nine conference games, each carrying upset risk that compounds multiplicatively. If Utah has roughly an 80% chance of winning each individual Big 12 game, the probability of winning all nine is roughly 13%, a number that aligns closely with the current market price.
Road exposure matters especially. Utah's recent history in conference away games under the Kyle Whittingham era included several one-score losses against inferior opponents. Scalley inherited Whittingham's roster depth but not his two decades of institutional knowledge in managing close games on the road. The market appears to be pricing in a coaching transition discount on top of the schedule upgrade.
The Case Against Utah Going Undefeated: What Would Have to Go Wrong
The strongest bearish argument is simple: Utah's nonconference opponents were bad, and the Utes have not been tested in a competitive second half. Their closest game was a 33-point win. That tells you nothing about how Dampier will perform when trailing in the fourth quarter at Iowa State or facing a hostile crowd in Boulder.
ESPN's Bill Connelly ranked 35 unbeaten teams after Week 3, and even Georgia, his top selection, was given only a 22.3% chance of finishing 12-0 by ESPN's own model. Georgia plays in the SEC, which is arguably tougher, but the point holds: going undefeated in any Power conference is a low-probability outcome, typically achieved by fewer than two teams per season across all of FBS.
Injury vulnerability compounds the math. Dampier has been efficient, but Utah's backup quarterback situation is largely untested. One awkward hit on a scramble changes the entire calculus for the remaining nine games. The market is not pricing in a specific injury. It is pricing in the cumulative probability that something goes wrong across 10 remaining weeks.
Bears can also point to preseason sportsbook odds from BetOnline, which listed Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Indiana, Oregon, and Georgia as the five most likely programs to finish undefeated. Utah was not among them. The market opened skeptical of this roster, and three blowouts over weak opponents have not changed that structural view.
How Utah's Undefeated Season Odds Have Moved Since Week 1
The chart tells a clean story. Utah's implied probability peaked near 24% as the wins stacked up, then reversed sharply once the calendar turned toward conference play. The 3-day decline to 16% was not triggered by an injury, a coaching scandal, or a narrow escape. It was triggered by time: the Big 12 schedule getting closer.
This pattern, a peak in nonconference play followed by a sell-off into league games, is common in undefeated season markets. Early wins inflate perceived strength because the sample is small and the opponents are soft. The market then corrects as it prices in specific matchups rather than abstract momentum.
At 16%, the contract implies Utah has roughly a one-in-six chance of running the table, lower than the odds of rolling a specific number on a standard die. The question for traders is whether the Big 12 schedule justifies that skepticism or whether three consecutive blowouts contain real signal about this team's ceiling.
The bull case rests on defensive dominance. Allowing 24 points in three games, including a shutout of an in-state rival, is not nothing. If that defense travels to Ames and holds up, the repricing could reverse just as fast. But the market is betting it won't. Iowa State on September 26 is the first real data point. Until then, 16% prices in a team that has proved nothing against anyone who matters, regardless of how loudly the scoreboard disagrees.
