Pope Leo XIV is still scheduled to visit Peru. The Vatican has not cancelled the Nov. 11-17 Peru leg of his Nov. 6-17 Latin America trip, even after surgeons removed a cancerous tumor from his lung. On Kalshi, the Peru contract in "What countries will Pope Leo visit before 2027?" stood at 89% on Oct. 13, 2026. The Holy See confirmed lung adenocarcinoma and removal of the lower right lobe, and described the surgery as successful with no complications.

Will Pope Leo Still Visit Peru After Lung Surgery? The Trip Is Not Cancelled

The Peru contract fell from 98% to 89% over three days, a drop of about 9 percentage points. Cardinals Daniel Sturla and Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi have said the pope does not want to cancel the journey.

The medical timeline moved quickly. Leo disclosed a lung nodule and planned surgery on Oct. 11, then arrived at Rome's Gemelli hospital on Oct. 13. The Vatican canceled public audiences through Oct. 20 and expects a hospital stay of about a week. He is also expected to miss an Oct. 16 speech at an infertility conference, and his attendance at the Oct. 27 interfaith gathering in Assisi is in doubt.

The cardinals' remarks about the pope's wishes are reported statements, not an official Vatican announcement. According to la Repubblica, Leo moved the surgery earlier in the hope of keeping the Peru trip on schedule. The leaders of Peru and Argentina have publicly said they hope he will come.

The decline lines up with the Oct. 11 disclosure and the Oct. 13-14 confirmation of the adenocarcinoma diagnosis and lobe removal.

At 89%, the market still treats a Peru visit before 2027 as a strong favorite. The contract printed its period low at that level, with no rebound so far. The sources establish when the drop happened relative to the medical news. We could not establish why individual traders sold.

The stakes on the ground are large. A ZENIT report dated Oct. 12 cites Peruvian government projections of 3.1 million attendees. Peru is also the longest and most demanding leg of the trip, which covers about 19,000 miles over 14 flights.

What Could Move the Peru Odds Next: Vatican Trip Updates and Recovery News

The first test is any Holy See Press Office change to the Nov. 6-17 itinerary. The Vatican announced the trip on Aug. 5 and published the full program on Sept. 21. The schedule runs through Uruguay (Nov. 6-8) and Argentina (Nov. 8-11) before Peru. If the Vatican reaffirms that program, or trims only the early stops, the Peru leg's position would strengthen. A postponement would hit the contract directly, because it resolves on Jan. 1, 2027, and leaves little room to reschedule.

The second test is the recovery bulletin. The pope's discharge after the expected week-long stay, and whether he resumes audiences after Oct. 20, will be the earliest public evidence of whether he can manage the Peru program. That program includes a helicopter flight to Santa Cruz de Succhabamba in the Andes, the high-altitude stop at Cusco, and Pucallpa in the Amazon.

The Peru leg itself, from Nov. 11 to 17, decides the outcome. It includes a Mass at Pampas de Pimentel in Chiclayo, Leo's former diocese, and ends with a Mass at Las Palmas Air Base in Lima. Traders tracking every destination can follow the full Pope Leo travel market before 2027.
