Denny Hamlin can still win the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship, but he trails Kyle Larson by about 49 points with four Chase races left. A fifth-place finish at Charlotte on Oct. 11 came with a pit-road penalty that cost him more ground, according to RACER.

Denny Hamlin's Championship Chances Rise After the Charlotte Top-Five

Kalshi priced Hamlin's implied probability in the NASCAR Cup Series Champion market at 24% on Oct. 15, up from 18% three days earlier, a gain of 6 percentage points.

The price rose against the standings. Early in the Bank of America 400, a Joe Gibbs Racing crew member fell over the wall and touched the hot side of pit road while retrieving a tire, and the team also interfered with Connor Zilisch's crew in the stall ahead. Hamlin recovered from 12th on the grid to fifth but called it a "lackluster day." "We didn't have a race-winning car when it really counted at the end," he said, adding that his car "kept falling away" as the track cooled (RACER).

What Explains Hamlin's Rise, and What the Sources Leave Unresolved

Charlotte is the only sourced catalyst, and it points the wrong way for a rally. It marked the fourth of six Chase races in which Hamlin's team stumbled: a wall hit at Darlington after a slow stop, another slow stop at St. Louis, a spin with damage at Las Vegas, and the Charlotte safety penalty. After Las Vegas, where Hamlin finished 16th and Larson finished second, the gap stood at 40 points. After Charlotte, Hamlin said the team has "got to execute better" (NASCAR).

Neither source explains the three-day rise, and no verified volume data is available to tie the move to trading activity.

Hamlin's Next Test: Phoenix and the Remaining Chase Races

Phoenix comes next, and the season ends at Homestead-Miami on Nov. 8. NASCAR.com's power rankings flag Phoenix as favorable ground for Ryan Blaney, who has won there in back-to-back races. Watch the 49-point gap: if Hamlin closes it at Phoenix, the 24% price has support, and if it widens again, the price is exposed.
