What is behind the Josephine move, and what the sources don't show
The film's Sundance result has precedent. Variety reports that Josephine is the first film to win both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award since CODA and Minari. Both of those films earned Best Picture nominations, and CODA won the award. Josephine then competed for the Golden Bear at Berlin in February.
Sumerian Pictures, a first-time distributor, is pushing the film in a long list of categories:
- Best Picture: producers David Kaplan, Josh Peters, de Araújo, Marina Stabile, Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan
- Director and Original Screenplay: de Araújo
- Lead Actress: Mason Reeves, who plays the film's young protagonist
- Supporting Actor: Tatum
- Supporting Actress: Chan
- Craft categories: cinematography, editing, score and others
Gold Derby lists Tatum as a possible first-time Supporting Actor nominee. Collider and Gold Derby both name Reeves's performance and de Araújo's screenplay as possible nomination paths.
We could not establish a specific event between Oct. 12 and Oct. 15 that triggered the jump. The Sundance wins came nine months earlier. The move is best read as traders pricing in the film's festival record and its campaign.
The subject matter risk and what could confirm or reverse Josephine's odds
The main case against the film may be its content. Josephine depicts a child witnessing a sexual assault, which could be a difficult subject for some voters. The film also goes to awards season with a distributor that has never run an Oscar campaign.
Josephine is also competing for attention with films already ranked in the Los Angeles Times' top 10 Best Picture contenders. Recent repricing elsewhere shows how quickly this field shifts. Gold Derby tracked gains for Artificial and You Can See Everything, while The Lines reported that poor reviews sank Digger.
Readers can follow the full field on the Oscar nominations for Best Picture market page. The deciding event is the Academy's nominations announcement, which will either confirm or end the contract. Before then, the clearest test is whether Sumerian's campaign leads to precursor recognition for Reeves, Tatum or de Araújo's screenplay.
