California gas would need to rebound roughly $0.63 to hit $6.80 this year. AAA's statewide regular average stood at about $6.17 on Oct. 19, 2026, down from $6.31 a week earlier, according to AAA. The decline follows Gov. Gavin Newsom's Sept. 28 order suspending summer-blend rules so stations could sell winter-blend fuel early.

On Kalshi, the "Above $6.80" outcome in "How high will gas prices in California get this year?" fell from 34% to 28%, and was priced at 28% on Oct. 20.

Why the Early Winter-Blend Switch Lowered California Prices

Federal data show the same reversal. The EIA statewide average fell 12.3 cents to $6.104 for the week of Oct. 12, from $6.227 the week of Oct. 5. That earlier reading was the second-highest on record, $0.044 under the June 2022 peak of $6.271. AAA Southern California reported that Los Angeles wholesale prices dropped after the winter-blend switch while West Coast refiners increased output, pointing to further pump declines "as long as no supply issues occur." These details come from AAA Southern California releases issued on different dates in October.

The decline is spreading across the state. San Diego prices fell for a 16th straight day on Oct. 17, to $6.247, according to Times of San Diego. Stanislaus County slipped to $6.02 on Oct. 19, per the Modesto Bee, and Merced County fell to $6.14, per the Merced Sun-Star.

The math works against the contract. The week-over-week drop was about $0.14, from $6.31 to $6.17. Reaching $6.80 would require a gain of roughly $0.63. That would push the average well above AAA's record for California regular, $6.4375, set June 14, 2022. Still, one weekly decline does not make a trend, and the sources do not say how long the winter-blend effect will last. No source directly links the 6-point market move to a specific event; the timing coincides with the price decline.

What Could Push California Gas Back Toward $6.80

Analysts cited in local reporting describe prices as volatile and tied to geopolitics. The Iran war, which began Feb. 28, 2026, keeps pressure on crude supply, and KALW reports that Californians are paying billions more for fuel as a result. The closures of the Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles and the Valero refinery in Benicia have cut in-state refining capacity, with estimates ranging from roughly 17% to 21%. With that cushion gone, a single unplanned outage could reverse the wholesale decline. A USC economist's worst-case scenario puts the year-end range at $7.24 to $8.43. UC Davis researcher Colin Murphy called $8 a worst case.

Readers can follow live pricing for every threshold on the California gas prices market page. The next test is AAA's California average for the week of Oct. 26, 2026. A second straight decline would support the market's repricing. A rebound to $6.31 or higher would challenge it.
