Notre Dame's National Championship Chances Rise Ahead of the BYU Game

Notre Dame's national championship chances are climbing before it plays BYU, not after. On Polymarket, the FBS Independents outcome in the Conference to Win the National Championship market rose from 6% to 16% between Oct. 11 and Oct. 14, a gain of roughly 10 percentage points. No. 2 Notre Dame is 6-0 after a 58-7 win over Stanford at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend on Oct. 10. It plays at No. 8 BYU on ABC at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 17.

ESPN's College GameDay will broadcast from Provo for the first time since 2009, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Our reading is that the market is effectively a Notre Dame bet, because the Irish are the independent with a realistic title case. The market's rules, not this article, define which programs count as "FBS Independents."

ESPN's Football Power Index ranks Notre Dame No. 1. The model gives the Irish an 18.0% chance to win the title and a 93.4% chance to make the College Football Playoff, per Sports Illustrated's Notre Dame site. These are model estimates, not market prices. The sources do not establish whether the Stanford result, the FPI ranking, or the BYU buildup moved the price.

How the FBS Independents Price Moved From 6% to 16%

The chart covers the three-day window from Oct. 11 to Oct. 14.

Consensus prediction market price

We have no verified volume data for this window, so this article makes no claim about how much trading activity sits behind the repricing. The 16% price for the entire independent group sits just below the FPI's 18.0% for Notre Dame alone. That gap suggests the market is pricing one team, not a field.

What the Oct. 17 BYU Game Means for Notre Dame's Playoff Hopes

BYU (5-0, 3-0 Big 12) hosts the first top-10 matchup in LaVell Edwards Stadium history. CBS Sports framed the stakes bluntly: BYU is playing for a nice résumé boost, while Notre Dame "is fighting for its CFP life". That language is CBS's framing, not a market signal, and it is a strong claim for an unbeaten team that FPI gives better than a 93% playoff chance.

BYU coach Kalani Sitake called the week "a different beast" and said Notre Dame "could easily be No. 1," the Deseret News reported. Sitake also noted that Notre Dame sought the game after its USC series was put on hold.

The counter-case against holding 16% is concentration. Because the outcome hinges on a single program, a loss in Provo hits the whole position directly. A price this close to the FPI figure already assumes a good deal of Notre Dame success, which leaves less room for an upset. Readers tracking the full field can follow the Conference to Win the National Championship odds page.

A Notre Dame win would test whether 16% holds or extends. A loss would test how far it falls. The next checkpoint is Saturday, Oct. 17, in Provo.
