A Washington Post poll reported Oct. 1, 2026 shows Democrat Shannon Taylor narrowly ahead of Republican Rep. Rob Wittman in Virginia's 1st District, 50-46 according to Taylor's campaign summary of the poll. No result exists yet with the Nov. 3 election two weeks away. Traders in the VA-01 House winner? market priced Taylor at 63% on Oct. 21, up from 57% three days earlier. That figure is a trader-implied probability of victory, not a vote share or a poll lead.

Who Is Leading the VA-01 Race? Shannon Taylor vs. Rob Wittman

Three kinds of measures describe the race. The Post poll gives Taylor a narrow edge among sampled voters. Sabato's Crystal Ball moved the seat from Leans Republican to Toss-up, and Cook Political Report moved it from Lean Republican to Toss-up on Oct. 9. Market prices sit apart from these: Kalshi priced Taylor at 62% and Polymarket at 64% on Oct. 21, a 2-percentage-point gap between venues.

Taylor, the Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney, is challenging a long-serving incumbent on corruption and cost of living. She accuses Wittman of trading stock in companies he regulates. She also backs a congressional stock-trading ban and term limits, and she says she takes no corporate PAC money.

What Moved Shannon Taylor's VA-01 Chances?

Two developments landed during the three-day rise. Taylor's campaign released an ad featuring sheriffs rebutting Wittman's attacks on her record. Democrats also ramped up outreach in the 1st, 2nd and 5th Districts two weeks before Election Day, according to the Virginia Mercury.

Both arrived against a backdrop of heavy turnout and ad spending in early voting. We could not establish which factor, if any, drove the trading.

Are There Polls for Shannon Taylor in VA-01?

Yes. The Washington Post poll reported Oct. 1 is the most recent independent public survey, and it showed Taylor ahead 50-46, per the campaign's summary. Other polls exist, including a DCCC poll from September 2026 and a 2025 PPP poll, and polling sites such as Pollsmax aggregate them. A four-point lead may fall within a typical survey's margin of error, so it does not settle who is ahead.

A poll is a snapshot of sampled voters on specific dates. A 63% price is traders' estimate of the final outcome, folding in the poll, ratings, spending and campaign events.

In mid-October interviews with WTVR, Taylor said inflation and corruption top voters' concerns. She has also laid out positions on the Epstein files, according to Dogwood.

Is VA-01 a Toss-Up? Sabato and Cook Agree

Sabato's Crystal Ball calls VA-01 a Toss-up, and Cook does as well, per Cook's ratings table on 270toWin. These ratings are expert judgments about competitiveness, not probabilities and not vote counts. The Post poll is consistent with a close race.
